How we hire and train caregivers

Who walks through your parent's door, and how we decide

The caregiver is the whole service. This page explains exactly how we find, screen, train and supervise ours, because you should not have to take our word for it.

Seven steps

From application to first shift

  1. 1

    Application and phone screen

We look for experience with older adults, reliability and the temperament to stay calm. Many applicants come from CNA programs, Sierra College health programs and referrals from our own caregivers.

  2. 2

In-person interview with Carly or Ginelle

Scenario questions: a client who refuses a shower, a fall, a family member who disagrees with the care plan. We hire people who think clearly and treat clients as adults.

  3. 3

State background check and Home Care Aide registration

California requires every caregiver at a licensed Home Care Organization to clear a Department of Justice and FBI fingerprint background check and be listed on the state's Home Care Aide Registry. Ours are, before their first shift.

  4. 4

    Reference and work history verification

We call previous employers and personal references and confirm work history and eligibility.

  5. 5

    Health screening

Tuberculosis clearance and the health requirements set by the state for Home Care Aides.

  6. 6

    Training before the first shift

State-required training plus our own orientation: safe transfers and body mechanics, personal care technique, infection control, emergency procedures, communication, documentation and client rights. Caregivers assigned to memory care clients complete additional dementia-specific training.

  7. 7

    Ongoing supervision

Visit notes are reviewed. Carly or Ginelle makes periodic in-home supervisory visits. Annual continuing education is required to stay on our team.

Why it matters that caregivers are employees

Some agencies and most online platforms treat caregivers as independent contractors. That shifts liability, payroll taxes and supervision onto the family, and it means nobody is really responsible for training or backup. Our caregivers are W-2 employees. We carry the workers' compensation and liability insurance, handle payroll and taxes, provide backup coverage when someone is sick and supervise the work. That is what a licensed agency is for.

Matching

How we match a caregiver to a client

  • Physical requirements of the care plan (transfers, lifting, mobility support)
  • Experience with the client's specific conditions, especially dementia
  • Personality, pace and communication style
  • Language, cultural and gender preferences
  • Location, so the caregiver's commute supports reliability
  • Schedule stability, so the same person can cover the same shifts

You meet the caregiver we propose before the first shift. If it is not the right fit, we introduce someone else. Request a consultation to start.
